Status of SPPS and User Manual and New Modifications to SPPS 1-D and 2-D

SPPS (Sand Production Pipe Saver) is erosion prediction software developed by E/CRC that contains a variety of models to calculate thickness loss rate (penetration rate) in several geometries. SPPS utilizes particle tracking to determine particle impact in SPPS applying a one-dimensional (1D) particle routine; however, this approach is deficient for small particles and high-density flows. So, a two-dimensional (2D) particle tracking routine that utilizes stored flow solutions that are more realistic than the 1D representation was developed to more accurately predict particle impact velocities. These particle velocities are then used in erosion equations to determine erosion. The traditional approach is also available that comes closer to replicating computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation results. The 2D models also incorporate turbulent particle dispersion.

Changes are being made to SPPS 6.2.2 (latest release 2023) for the next release SPPS 7.0. A new CFD-based velocity profile and trajectory-based model is implemented in SPPS 7.0. A “smart” particle tracking procedure is adopted which can account for the particle size effect on the resulting erosion. The newly implemented hybrid CFD/1D model has been validated with various flow and particle conditions for standard elbow geometries. Also, in the next release SPPS 7.0, additional changes and updates in geometries like sudden expansion and gradual contractions have been included.
